Why has UBC declared a climate emergency now?

On December 5, 2019, in response to increased advocacy from UBC community members around the university’s divestment strategy and the climate strike in late September, UBC joined other organizations and governments around the world to declare a climate emergency. Drafted in collaboration with community members, the declaration outlined commitments UBC would immediately adopt to ensure more bold and urgent action is taken to address the climate crisis.

While UBC has recently declared a climate emergency, it acknowledges that this emergency has been experienced for decades by communities around the world. Indigenous and marginalized communities disproportionately face the devastating impacts of climate destruction, while being the least responsible.
