What is a climate emergency?

There are varying definitions of a climate emergency. A climate emergency declaration recognizes that we are in a state of emergency and is typically followed by a series of urgent commitments and priorities that support more drastic change.

For UBC, it means acknowledging that we know humanity is getting closer to a climate catastrophe and that immediate actions need to be taken in order to reduce emissions and mitigate climate change, build resilience to its impacts and seek to advance climate justice.
