November 6-18: COP27 Climate Justice Pavilion

The Deep South Center for Environmental Justice, WE ACT for Environmental Justice and the Bullard Center for Environmental & Climate Justice, along with an international team of collaborators, is hosting the first-ever Climate Justice Pavilion at COP27. November 10 – UBC Reads Sustainability with Geoff Dembicki

Join climate investigative journalist and award-winning author Geoff Dembicki live from Brooklyn for a conversation on his latest work, which draws from confidential oil industry documents to uncover how companies like Exxon, Koch Industries, and Shell built a global right-wing echo chamber to protect oil sands profits. Event is free to register.

In the Climate Community Connector, we will come together to embody resistance and create our own mycelium-like network of climate activism! Connect, affect and envision among folks who care to make a difference.  Join us at the UBC Global Lounge on Monday the 14th of November!

Join UBC student and faculty delegates on-the-ground at COP27 in conversation with CBC News climate journalist Lisa Johnson for an inside view of the negotiations, discussions, and emotions of the conference. Free to register.

November 19 – Raising Marpole Voices: A Community Conversation on Homelessness in South Vancouver

This event is focused on reducing the stigma around homelessness in South Vancouver. By centering the voices of those with lived experience, and creating a space to build community and strengthen networks, we hope to promote action and work towards the creation of tangible solutions around extreme weather.

October 14 – Coextinction Movie Screening and Ocean Afterparty

The long awaited Coextinction Movie Screening will take place on October 14 at 6-9pm, followed by an evening ocean afterterparty and student-led reception. Watch the award-winning Coextinction - a film about the final attempt to protect the last 73 Southern Resident orcas from extinction. Engage in a live Q&A moderated by Bodhi Patil (student-activist), featuring Will George (Tsleil Waututh water protector), and two more special guests! This event is open to everyone and we invite everyone to join!

November 15 (Deadline) – Catalyst Collaboration Fund – Call for Applicants

New funding is available for transdisciplinary projects and events focused on the climate and nature emergency. As part of the Institute’s focus on inter- and trans-disciplinary coordinated efforts to address the climate and nature emergency, we invite faculty at UBCV and UBCO and their associates to submit applications for the PWIAS Catalyst Collaboration Fund.

Abundance of Light – Reflecting on Power and Climate Change

The global community is awakening to the reality that has long been expressed by Indigenous leaders: colonialism is harming our planet and exacerbating the effects of climate change. And given the disproportionate effects of climate change on Indigenous Peoples, we need to continually question: whose voices are dominating the agenda and solutions?
